In 2005, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) voted to eliminate cultural mascot images of their member athletic teams.
No exhibit within Wounded Knee Museum has provoked more discussion than our display of t-shirts, hats, bumper stickers, banners and athlete paraphernalia depicting these mascots.
In 2007, we encouraged visitors to let us know of athletic teams and institutions they knew about by completing a form.

Molalla Oregon has the Molalla Indian as a mascot. The "Indian" is historically incorrect. It is a lurid orange clip art cartoon in a warbonnet. No Native Americans in the Western Valley of Oregon had such warbonnet. The High School plays "Indian" with a ceremony in the fall, a historically incorrect soccer field teepee ceremony and it paints the "Indian" on the soccer field so the head gets torn up during play. The State of Oregon banned these mascots in spring, 2012 and the school has till 2017 to find a new mascot. There is no honor here and I can hardly wait to never see the ugly clip art stereotype again!
There is a slight misconception with the University of Utah mascot. The mascot is actually a "Red Hawk". The University does still use the name Utes, with the blessing of the Ute Tribe.
You should update list you moron. Chief Logan, Kishacoquillas stopped being schools in 1989.They were in Mifflin County Pa.(Lewistown area)
I have been taken with the history of the Sioux peoples and their history especially regarding maltreatment by government and its agents. After many years I finally have a chance to visit the Black Hills. I intend to visit the site of Wounded Knee, but this dumb list means I will not be visiting your museum, such as it is.
