Means spoke Sunday as part of a weekend-long sacred buffalo harvest hosted by a group of Fort Lewis College students and alumni. The Buffalo Council group has hosted about a dozen such harvests at least once a year with the mission of fostering food self-sufficiency and increasing retention among Native American students at the college. One of the group’s goals is to start a buffalo herd on the 6,318-acre old Fort Lewis campus near Hesperus. They have long struggled with state and college officials in pursuing that project.
